Tibolone
Tibolone is a synthetic steroid used as a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) which mimics the activity of oestrogen and progesterone in the female body.
It is normally taken orally, when it is broken down in to three separate component parts that act in a similar way to the female sex hormones. It is hoped that treatment with tibolone will reduce the severity of menopausal symptoms.
However, it also has an oestrogenic effect on bone density which makes a good treatment for those who wish to prevent the onset of osteoporosis in oestrogen deficient women. However, it is recommended that tibolone is taken for at least five years and up to ten years to prevent oesteoporosis in post menopausal women.
