I can now live life to the full – Diane’s Hysterectomy Story

My periods were always heavy and extremely painful, even from the onset of puberty. When I became a teenager I went on the pill to help with pain etc, this was ok for a while but then by the age of 21 I wanted children. So I came off the pill and had three children in just under 6 years!

My husband then went for vasectomy so I didn’t need to be on contraception anymore so back came the pain and the heavy bleeding. My marriage eventually broke up and I was on my own for a while. I met my second husband on the internet and went back on the pill, but this time the pains etc stayed so we decided together that I would get sterilised and was advised it could help.

As you can guess it didn’t, so was recommended the ablation, which was successful for a while and then the pains and bleeding came back worse than ever and it got to the point where I wouldn’t go out in case it got too bad. Went to see my GP and he sent me for a scan and it showed I had fibroids. My GP decided that I would benefit from having a coil fitted purely to help with the pain etc but when it came to fitting it I couldn’t because the ablation had almost healed up the entry to my womb so it was decided there was no other way but hysterectomy.

I had a vaginal hysterectomy ( leaving my ovaries) on sept 4th 2013 and I spent 24 hours in hospital. I can honestly say its the best thing that has happened to me in a long time, the recovery time because i was a carer was 12 weeks and I had the odd twinge when I would have been due on but that seems to have stopped now and I can finally enjoy my life without worrying.
