A great laparoscopic hysterectomy experience – Jo’s story

Hi there, I had a total laparoscopic hysterectomy (fallopian tubes, cervix and womb) 2 and a 1/2 weeks ago, mid January 2015, I can honestly say I not only do I feel great, I’m about 85% back to normal, and have no real discomfort or pain. Best thing I have ever done.

I am 46 and not on the slim side and work full time in a very full on job, I am not a sport billy, liking good food and wine too much!

As soon as I got back to the ward after the surgery I made sure that I started drinking plenty of water to flush the anaesthestic from my system and asked for laxative to counter opiate based the pain killers. This made sure that bowel and bladder movement’s were underway the day after the operation. I only needed paracetamol and ibuprofen from day 3. I went for my first dog walk (albeit slowly) day 4 and have been going for a walk 2 to 3 times a day since. This really helped with the bloating that occurred week 1, the bloating has gone now. I also think the walking has aided the healing process due to improving blood flow. I know that not everyone has such an easy time but my recommendation is move and do!

As for sex, penetrative sex should wait six weeks, but have other forms of sex after 2 weeks if you feel up to it! Orgasm can give you tummy ache, if it does wait longer before trying again, but orgasm’s are just as good as before. I hope this helps.
